Hopefully many of us will be through the worst of the winter chills and viruses that were spreading throughout our communities at a rapid rate over Christmas and the New Year. Therefore, we should be ready to embrace the joys of Spring and new beginnings. However, this too can bring with it the less joyous experiences of Hayfever and Allergies.
I am therefore, encouraging patients to consider having Acupuncture as a preventative measure as well as a treatment for their Hayfever and Allergy symptoms. Hayfever was particularly bad for many sufferers last year and although Acupuncture can be very effective in treating symptoms, it is far better to have treatment to build up the immune system to help prevent or at least reduce the severity of the symptoms occurring.
Typical symptoms include a tickly throat, itchy nose, sneezing, watery, red & itchy eyes, nasal discharge and wheezing (especially if you have underlying respiratory problems as well). Furthermore, lethargy, sinus congestion and pressure build up in the head and forehead. Overall, making what should be the most picturesque and enjoyable time of the year, quite miserable for many people. This is not only due to the actual symptoms but due to having to stay in-doors and not being able to get out and enjoy any outdoor leisure activities with family and friends.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been effectively treating sinus problems naturally with acupuncture and herbal modalities for thousands of years. By inserting fine acupuncture needles into specific acu-points found in the body, this stimulates the nervous system to correct any imbalances in the flow of energy within the body. Therefore, opening up the nasal passages and allowing patients to breathe more easily and relieve respiratory and other accompanying symptoms. The aim is to then build and strengthen the patients Qi (energy) to prevent further build-up of mucous, to improve the immune system and therefore, help prevent these symptoms from returning or, even occurring in the first place.
